The eigth edition of our monthly series is part of the Vienna Art Week 2018. We are pleased to host our current Curator in Residence Hitomi Hasegawa, who will talk about her upcoming exhibition “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of the planet” in das weisse haus in spring 2019, realized on the occasion of 150 years of diplomatic relations between Austria and Japan.
Together with Emiko Ogawa (Curator Prix Ars Electronica) she will reflect on the meaning of friendship, as well as the bond between the Habsburg empire and a far east small country like Japan back in the 19th century: “History can only tell that diplomacy is based on the desire to gain profits, the negotiation not to be colonized or to colonize, it only leaves winners and losers. Colonialism shows how power affects the people and distorts their cultures. At least, for the friendship between individuals, the two should be equal.”
